Its dimensions are just over 5 cm (height 5.4 cm, width 5 cm). The vessel's unique shape conveys a realistic image of the insect, with its large eyes and pair of wings. The fly's legs are depicted more like hands.

The style of this vessel corresponds to the so-called Tell el-Jahudia pottery, rather than to the ancient Egyptian tradition proper. In the Nile Delta, it is often considered a sign of the presence of the Hyksos invaders.
