A Carolingian sword (Viking sword) with intricate gold inlay patterns, estimated to date from the late 10th to early 11th centuries.

This is an image of the same sword from different angles. The blade is lenticular in cross-section but without fullers. It is quite possible that it was created in Byzantine workshops specifically for the northern mercenaries—the Emperor's Varangian Guard. The location and circumstances of its discovery are unknown.
