Gold ring of a Frankish queen, 6th century
The sarcophagus of Arnegunda, wife of the Merovingian king Chlothar I (511-561), was discovered in the Basilica of Saint-Denis in 1959. The ring, found on the thumb of a female skeleton, bears the inscription ARNEGUNDIS surrounding the central monogram REG (REGINE—Latin for "queen"), which helped identify the burial.
