Video from our winter expedition to German World War II dugouts on the Volkhov Front, near the Krasnaya Gorka area. In the winter of 1942, German troops constructed these shelters in the region's distinctive blue clay. This type of soil has very low oxygen permeability and effectively seals objects buried within it. Under these anaerobic conditions, corrosion and bacterial activity slow dramatically, allowing both metal and organic artefacts to be preserved in remarkably good condition.

That is why the finds from these dugouts can be so rewarding. These clips were recorded on the first day of the excavation. We will share footage from the second day in one of our upcoming reels, so follow us to make sure you don't miss it.
