A surviving World War II-era StuG III assault gun has been discovered in Germany
During construction work at Cuxhaven/Nordholz Airfield, on the grounds of the Nordholz Naval Air Base on Germanyโs North Sea coast (northwestern Germany), a StuG III G self-propelled assault gun was uncovered.
According to reports, there may also be four additional armored vehicles and an aircraft buried at the site. The 29-ton assault gun had lain beneath the sand for approximately 80 years. Experts have already described the discovery as unique. Despite its considerable age, the vehicle has been preserved in remarkably good condition.
Sources indicate that at least five armored vehicles and a Junkers W 34 aircraft were buried at this location:
โThe armored vehicles remaining at Nordholz Air Base after the Wehrmachtโs surrender. In the upper-left corner of the photograph is a StuG III assault gun, followed by a Jagdpanzer 38 (Hetzer), then two more StuG III assault guns. On the right is a Marder III tank destroyer, and in the lower-left corner is another StuG III. The aircraft is believed to be a Junkers W 34. After the Americans departed, these vehicles were reportedly placed in several large pits near the air base and covered with sand.โ
The fate of the recovered vehicle has already been decided: it will be transported to the German Tank Museum in Munster, where it will undergo a thorough restoration. Once the work is completedโa process expected to take at least a couple of yearsโthe restored StuG III is planned to become part of the exhibition at the Bundeswehr Military History Museum in Dresden.
